CHASING YOUR OWN TALE - A Beginner's Manual

Take one loving family, make that a husband and two children, hypothetically speaking. Love them very much and care for them for many, many years.

Take one person, make that, oh, I don’t know, let’s say, hypothetically speaking, you. Love her very much and care for her for many, many years.

Now.

Attend a dinner party in a lovely little black dress. Apply make-up and a wide-open smile. Be asked by, oh, I don’t know, let’s say, hypothetically speaking, eleven different people “What do you do?”

Return home late on Saturday night and try to describe how you feel on your blog.

And that’s how you chase your own tale.

Good night all xxxx

Wait, that's an easy one! You're a writer. Doesn't matter whether you get paid for it. You write, and people love to read it. So that's that.

Ah but you are so many things dear Eleanor, a wife, a daughter, a mother, a sister to two superfly girls, a poet, a wordsmith and an artist.

Mind you, when I lived in England after getting tired of being asked the very same question, I finally started to say I was a crisp (potato chip) taster. The best part was people actually believed me!

I'm a writer.
"Oh! Have I read anything you've written?"
Probably not.

More wine.

If I thought that the person was interesting I would say 'I lie on the sofa and eat cherries'

If I thought that the person was boring I would say 'I'm an administrator'

I think the question is more "What DON'T I do?" You do it all, and more.

I HATE that question, because once they hear the answer they either glaze over, sip their drink and look around desperately for someone else to talk with or they ask the next question I hate - what did you used to do? From which I infer that they see no value in what I have been doing for the past 8 years. Consequently I never ask people what line of work they are in and am probably a very boring conversationalist. Sigh - I bet you looked amazing though!

Eleanor. I wish I could've been there to answer that question for you.

Here's what I would have said:

"What does Eleanor do for a living? Why, she's a connoisseur, darling. A connoisseur of life."

Then I would've nudged you and winked...and we'd walk away, arm in arm, together in our lovely black dresses, to get another drink.
