Seven

The Beckhams named their baby Harper Seven. I understand Harper, OK, it's a bit of a trend at the moment. Everyone loves to love "To Kill A Mockingbird," you know, the author Harper Lee and then Scout is also making a showing. Not my cup of tea, but I can deal with Harper, and I'm even willing to look the other way and smile at Scout.

But Seven?

Please.

A number is not a name. I don't care if it's the number on the shirt of her really, really talented soccer-playing Daddy. I don't care if she was born at 7am on the the 7th of the 7th. Surely they must have accumulated a wonderful list of girls' names by now, surely they realise that girls' names are the most wonderful names to choose, so much more fun than choosing boys' names, really, especially after you've had three boys.

Seven? Seven is a movie starring Brad Pitt, with Gwyneth Paltrow's severed head in a box.

What has happened to the truly meaningful tradition of naming one's child after a dearly loved relative who has passed away? Call me an egoist but it gives me great joy to imagine that my great-great-great-granddaughter might be called Eleanor, in my memory.

Oh Eleanor it is so sweet that you would think either Beckham has read a book, let alone 'To Kill A Mockingbird'.

And while my facetiousness is quite heartfel,if possibly a little mean-spirited, it is backed up by the fact that La Beckham has stated publicly the only book she has ever read was her'own' autobiography. So sad. Imagine if one or more of their children is actually interested in something other than fashion or sport?

I hadn't heard it.

"severed head in a box". LOL

I feel sorry for that poor little girl. She'll be her Mummy's little fashion accessory.

One of my friends has a little Eleanor and calls her Nell.
DId Portman and Millepied announce what baby's middle name is? Perhaps you could suggest the number to match the letter the poor child's been saddled with :-)

All three of ours are named for their grandparents - I am named for my nana - I love the idea of names being handed down the generations.

Maybe "seven" will pop up down the track in the Beckham lineage?

Oh Eleanor, how I agree. Had we had a boy the middle name would have been my granpa's name, which was Melbourne, and we would have had to add Craig's grandpa, just because he was Sidney.

Ellie,

I interviewed a lady a few years ago and her son's name was seven. I said, "Seven? Like, S-E-V-E-N? and she said, "No, the number, the symbol."

Her husband was a jazz musician.

This explains everything. No?

Maybe they liked that movie with Brad Pitt and Gwenyth. Don't look IN THE BOX! Her HEAD is in the BOX!

Miss you E.

Have you already forgotten the tv show Blossom that was popular in the 90's?? Blossoms best friend was called Six. It did confuse me as a kid though...I kept wondering whether she would have to change her name at each birthday...

I also didn't think that Harper came from Harper Lee... I just assumed it was from Harper's Bazaar. That seems to be more the type if books they'd read...

I love this post and these comments. And I come away just wanting to name someone Eleanor.

Hello, Eleanor, I've just happened upon your blog via - well, I forget whose! Yes, what has become of names? Your hope that perhaps a very great granddaughter might one day bear your name is a wonderful one, though I caution against continuous use of the same name generation after generation. It makes sorting out all the Daniels and Marys a bit tricky when you're doing the family tree, you know?

You clearly know so much about the subject, you’ve covered so many bases. Great stuff from this part of the internet. Again, thank you for this blog.
